THE CINEMA

1. There is no denying that cinema plays many roles in

the life of any society. Nowadays contemporary people are fascinated by the cinema, we can’t imagine our life without cinema industry products. Cinema has become an integral part of the modern way of life. It can serve as an excellent vehicle of culture, because its possibilities are unlimited.

2. At the dawn of the cinema, its power to show recent events was recognized and appreciated by the public. More than anything else, this unique quality secured popularity for the film as a new form of getting instruction and entertainment from. Therefore, cinema is considered to be one of the best ways of spending leisure time.

3. There is a great variety of films, offered by the film producing companies today. The range of their kinds is rather extensive: feature films, theatrical films, horror films, thrillers, popular science, crime, adventure films, travelogues, documentaries, musicals, comedies, animated cartoons, puppet films and many others. Besides, the films may be colour or black and white, full-length or short, sound or silent, dubbed in mother tongue, three-dimensional or wide-screen.

4. We can see films either in the cinema or on TV. As many people these days are often short of time, they practically have no time for going to the cinema. For this reason they see films on television more frequently. But when they finally manage to go to the cinema, in most cases they choose amusing comedies to enjoy. Many people prefer feature films, like love-stories and entertaining comedies, to thrillers and horror films. Elderly people relax in front of a TV set watching the stories depicting lives of ordinary people, their feelings and every-day problems. Such films move them deeply and provoke feelings of sympathy or hatred for the heroes. They leave a deep and lasting impression on them as a rule.

5. A modern cinema showing contains a newsreel which shows up pictures of important recent events and inventions in the whole world. It is usually shown before the main feature film and it is always worth seeing.

Sometimes animated cartoons keep the audience in the state of excitement from the beginning to the end. A recently produced “Avatar” cartoon may brightly prove this point of view. Generally speaking, animated cartoons are known to be popular with both adults and children.

6. There are also educational films which are arranged mainly for schoolchildren and students. Their primary purpose is to broaden young people’s knowledge in different spheres of human activities.

7. In those countries, where the cinematographic industry is well-developed, a number of tickets sold a year, is more than one billion. Lately shot cinema films gather so many cinema-goers on the first night showing, that you can’t help seeing the notice “House is Full” or ”Sold Out” at the cinema entrance door. In this case the best way to get tickets is to book them in the “Advance Booking Office” beforehand.

8. New movies sooner or later are shown on TV and can be rented or purchased as video or digitally recorded copies. All people in the modern world are equipped with video, DVD players and recorders at home. Many of them have home-cinema equipment. It deprives them of going to the cinema and makes them sit mesmerized in front of TVs for hours. Luckily attending the cinema is a relatively inexpensive leisure time activity, so nobody will refuse from attending a first night showing of a new film in the cinema-theatre. It is rather affordable today.

9. Many scientists consider cinema to be one of the modern kinds of art because its influential and educational force is evident. Cinema provides the auditorium with visual images of beauty on different levels: physical beauty, beauty of the soul, beauty of nature, beauty of human actions, bravery, devotion, sacrificing love, patriotism and many others. It is evident, that cinema art pieces develop viewer’s aesthetic perception of the world’s artistic heritage.
