No book tied to a world this large happens without a lot of people making sure that it all comes together. This book in particular required even more work from more people, given a health scare that resulted in me going through eye surgery in the middle of the rough draft.
Thanks to everyone at BioWare for their support, but especially: Mary Kirby, for explaining Orlesian politics, and then explaining them again more slowly and with shorter words; Ben Gelinas, for giving the book the exhaustive lore treatment it needed to bring a novice Dragon Age writer up to speed; Ramil Sunga, for the wonderful cover art that brought Empress Celene to life; and David Gaider and Mike Laidlaw, for trusting the new guy with the first not-written-by-David Dragon Age novel.
Thanks to Stacy Hill at Tor, for handling my issues with both rapid-onset vision degradation and overly excited adverbs with equal aplomb, and to David Hale Smith and Lizz Blaise at Inkwell, for keeping me sane during the very interesting parts.
Most of all, thanks to my wife, Karin, for doing all the things that required looking at a screen for the three months I was functionally unable to do so, and for dual-wielding the lads during the many long nights it took to recover and get writing again. I couldn’t have finished this book without you, and I would almost certainly still be hunting for the stupid eye drops.
