THE LAND OF COUNTERPANE
When I was sick and lay a-bed, I had two pillows at my head, And all my toys beside me lay To keep me happy all the day.
And sometimes for an hour or so I watched my leaden soldiers go, With different uniforms and drills, Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;
And sometimes sent my ships in fleets All up and down among the sheets; Or brought my trees and houses out, And planted cities all about.
I was the giant great and still That sits upon the pillow-hill, And sees before him, dale and plain, The pleasant land of counterpane.
Mother Goose rhymes: LITTLE GIRL
Little girl, little girl, Where have you been? I've been to see grandmother Over the green. What did she give you? Milk in a can. What did you say for it? Thank you, Grandam.

Boys and girls come out to play, The moon doth shine as bright as day. Leave your supper and leave your sleep, And join your playfellows in the street. Come with a whoop and come with a call, Come with a good will or not at all. Up the ladder and down the wall, A half-penny loaf will serve us all; You find milk, and I'll find flour, And we'll have a pudding in half an hour.
*** *** ***
There was a little boy and a little girl, Lived in an alley; Says the little boy to the little girl, Shall I, oh, shall I? Says the little girl to the little boy, What shall we do? Says the little boy to the little girl, I will kiss you! *** *** ***
What are little boys made of? What are little boys made of? Frogs and snails And puppy-dogs' tails, That's what little boys are made of.
What are little girls made of? What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice And all that's nice, That's what little girls are made of.
What are young men made of? What are young men made of? Sighs and leers And crocodile tears, That's what young men are made of.
What are young women made of? What are young women made of? Ribbons and laces, And sweet pretty faces, That's what young women are made of.
What are old women made of? What are old women made of? Bushes and thorns, And old cow's horns, That's what old women are made of.
What are our sailors made of? What are our sailors made of? Pitch and tar, Pig-tail and scar, That's what our sailors are made of.
What are our soldiers made of? What are our soldiers made of? Pipeclay and drill, The foeman to kill, That's what our soldiers are made of.
*** *** ***
There was a little girl, and she had a little curl Right in the middle of her forehead; When she was good, she was very, very good, But when she was bad, she was horrid.
*** *** ***
A diller, a dollar, A ten o'clock scholar, What makes you come so soon? You used to come at ten o'clock, But now you come at noon.
*** *** ***
It's raining, it's raining, There's pepper in the box, And all the little ladies Are picking up their frocks.
