HIGHER EDUCATION

1.1. Study the following vocabulary notes:

Tuition – a sum of money charged for teaching or instruction by a school, college, or university.

SAT – The SAT Reasoning Test (formerly Scholastic Aptitude Test and Scholastic Assessment Test) is a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. The SAT is owned, published, and developed by the College Board, a non-profit organization in the United States. The College Board claims the test can assess a student’s readiness for college. The test was first introduced in 1901, and its name and scoring have changed several times. The current SAT Reasoning Test, introduced in 2005, takes three hours and forty-five minutes, and costs $47 ($75 International), excluding late fees. Possible scores range from 600 to 2400, combining test results from three 800-point sections (math, critical reading, and writing).

Trustee – a member of a board that manages the affairs and administers the funds of an institution or organization.

Alumna – pl. alumnae [-ni:]) – a female former pupil or student of a particular school, college, or university.

Alumnus – pl. alumni [-ni]) – a male former pupil or student of a particular school, college, or university

Guidance counselor (school counselor or educational counselor) – a member of the staff of a high school whose job is advising students about course selection, possible careers, preparation for college, etc.

Core curriculum is a curriculum, or course of study, which is deemed central and usually made mandatory for all students of a school or school system. At the undergraduate level, individual college and university administrations and faculties sometimes mandate core curricula, especially in the liberal arts.

Major – an academic major, major concentration, concentration, or simply major is a college or university student’s main field of specialization during his or her undergraduate studies which would be in addition to, and may incorporate portions of, a core curriculum. The university department offering the major defines a framework for this specialized portion of a student’s studies, including a certain number of required courses and a certain number of freely chosen courses relevant to the major.

An academic minor is a college or university student’s declared secondary field of study or specialization during his or her undergraduate studies.

Undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a bachelor’s degree, such as in the United States, where a university entry level is known as undergraduate while students of higher degrees are known as graduates.
