Grammar Note

Some verbs can be followed by an -ing form or by to + infinitive, but there is a difference in meaning. Study the following table carefully and then do the exercise below.

Verb + -ing form + to + infinitive
Forget / Remember = forget / remember an earlier action: Do you remember going to school for the first time? I’ll never forget meeting him. = forget / remember to do a future action: I must remember to set my alarm clock tonight. Don’t forget to lock the back door.

Regret = feel sorry about the past: I really regret getting that tattoo when I was eighteen. = announce bad news: We regret to inform you of delays in today’s service.
Stop = finish an action:   They stopped making fax machines about ten years ago. = finish one action in order to do another one: We stopped to get petrol.
Try = do something to see what will happen: Try using a screwdriver to get the lid off. = If you try doing something, it implies that it might help you achieve another final objective: Won’t the car start? OK, have you tried cleaning the spark plugs? That sometimes does the trick. = make an effort to do something difficult: We tried to get tickets but the show was sold out. = When you try to do something, it implies that achieving that action is the objective: Don’t worry so much about the result – we did our best. We try to win and that’s all that anyone can ask.
