Carbon dioxide - large amounts of it - is believed to be the main contributor to climate change. Carbon dioxide is a naturally occurring element in the atmosphere, but it is also a byproduct of fossil-fuel combustion. While nature provides the means to deal with carbon, environmentalists fear the best defense – forests – against greenhouse gas emissions is rapidly being destroyed.

A. Listen to the report and expand on the following issues:

· The role of trees in solution of climate change problem;

· There is hope for forests, but mankind needs to move faster if they are to be saved;

· Programs that have been introduced recently;

· The impact of forests on regional economies;

· How to protect forests better;

· How to ensure reforestation;

· The significance of preventing deforestation and reducing its rate;

· How deforestation affects climate change;

· Forests conservation measures.

VI. Speaking: Preserving the environment

There is no doubt about the Earth’s capacity to supply us with sufficient wood; the question lies with our commitment to manage forests sustainably.

Hold a round-table discussion on the subject: “Forests are great providers and protectors”. There will be two major points to be discussed:

Why has the natural environment become a vital issue?

What can we do to improve the global situation in this respect?

Make use of the following ideas:

· Forests are home for animals and birds;

· People need the environment spiritually;

· Plants convert sunlight into the stored chemical energy;

· Forests help to determinate temperature, rainfall and other climatic conditions;

· We ought to act as a community of nations for the benefit of all humankind;

· People must fund the establishment of commercial wood plantations;

· Farmers can enforce less harmful harvesting techniques;

· The harvesting system could produce a regular supply of wood which in turn could preserve virgin forests;

· Producers have to increase wood processing;

· Manufacturers may encourage greater recycling of paper.
