The Moscow Metro

Part I

The capital of our country is a fast-paced city. Moscovites need a fast and a reliable means of transport and the metro is the most convenient.

The construction of Moscow Metro began in 1931 and did not even stop during the Second World War. Its first line was 11 km and at present the total length of Metro is about 300 km. Today the capital has 115 Metro stations. Every day 4.500.000 passengers travel on it. Metro trains run in accordance with a timetable at 80 second intervals. The temperature in Metro is kept constant. At every station there are escalators.

Our Metro is comfortable and beautiful. The architecture and decoration of the stations could be compared to those of palaces. A passenger in Moscow Metro doesn’t feel that he is underground. The stations are cleaned six times a day, the carriages every three days and tunnels once a week. As a rule metro rolling stock is replaced once every four years.

Now the automatic driving system is tested on the Metro and the computers are widely used.

The construction of Metro lines in Moscow will continue. All nine Moscow railway stations will be connected to the Metro network. The total length will reach 400 km.

Part II.

Nowadays the Moscow Metro is one of the most highly developed underground systems in the world. It is known for its beautiful architecture and cleanliness. All stations with their marble and mosaic decorations could be compared with palaces.

Work on the first section from “Sokolniki” to “Central Park” began (was started) in 1931. While the workers were building this line they encountered many engineering difficulties because of soil conditions. More than 75.000 men and women took part in the construction of the Moscow Metro. On Sundays thousands of volunteers assisted them.

The Moscow Metro consists of a circle line with twelve stations and other lines going from the center to the countryside. Construction work is still going on. Several million passengers travel on it every day.

The Moscow Metro is equipped with the latest machinery and has a perfect air-conditioning system. The modernization of the Moscow Metro will continue and in the future there’ll be a system of electronic computers that will provide a more efficient public service in our Metro.
