- Hello, Alex!

- Hello, Helen! How’s life?

- I’ve got so many things to do! First of all I must write a report “Justice and people who work for it in the English-speaking countries”. I’m going to the library to find some information about different legal professions. Do you happen to know anything about it?

- Yes, I do. I think I can give you some basic information and you can find more facts in the books or Internet. Well, if you are in dispute with another person and one of you decides to take the case to court, you will meet a variety of members of the legal professions. Their role, status and titles differ in different countries.

- Can you name main legal professions that are typical for most of the countries?

- Certainly. They are judges, lawyers, public prosecutors, attorneys, bailiffs,solicitors,barristers. All of them perform different functions.

- I think I can easily explain ones of a judge. A judge in court of law is a person who has the authority to decide how criminals should be punished or to make legal decisions.

- Exactly. Judges are the people who will decide your case. They exercise their power independently. If you look through some legal documents you may also come across letters “JP”.

- What do they stand for?

- Justice of the Peace. It is an official who acts as a judge in the lowest courts of law. He is also called a Magistrate.

- Oh, I thought there was only one word – “judge”. It doesn’t seem very simple, does it? But surely judges have assistants of some sort who help them to keep the records in the court.

- Yes, there are people who are responsible for court administration. They are clerks of the court and registrars.

- You also mentioned a bailiff? What are his responsibilities?

- Well, it is a little more complicated. In England a bailiff is a law officer whose job is to take the possessions and property of people who cannot pay their debts. In the USA a bailiff is an official who keeps order in a court of law, takes people to their seats, watches prisoners, etc.

- What about public prosecutors?

- Public prosecution services are mainly involved in criminal cases but they can also act on behalf of society in certain civil cases, for example adoption or questions of parentage.

- I am amazed! How can you remember all the details?

- Any legal profession demands good memory, proficiency in writing and speaking, researching, analyzing and thinking logically. And don’t forget that I’m going to enter one of the legal professions myself.

- Oh, it is so complicated! I need some time to structure all the legal professions in my head. Perhaps it’ll be easier in an alphabetical order: advocate, attorney, bailiff, barrister, judge, public prosecutor, solicitor.
