What do Summerhill pupils do after leaving?

When children leave Summerhill most go on to study for appropriate qualifications (A-level, BTEC, GNVQ) at Colleges of Higher Education. Their careers are varied. We have artists, doctors, lawyers, teachers, university professors, carpenters, scientists, musicians, chefs, actors, gardeners, farmers, publicans, newspaper reporters, film makers, television technicians, photographers, dancers, computer programmers, writers and illustrators, carers for the handicapped, businessmen and women....

I would like to do some work experience at the school - is this possible?

At the present time it is difficult for us to make full use of working students - unless they can fit in to our term times and do an official job of work. For many students this is not possible because they only want to do three or four weeks. We have not yet found a good way of making this work, but we have just acquired a new property on the school perimeter and are hoping to be able to accommodate students there in the future. We hope it will work out well as we have so very many enquiries.

Can I work at Summerhill?

If you are legally able to work in UK, have the skills for the job offered, are prepared to live on a very small wage, and are enthusiastic, humorous, hardworking and adaptable - you could be just what we are looking for!

May I visit the school?

Yes, we have visitors during all three terms of the year. They come just for the day and have a chat and a look round. We have a visitor’s committee to look after them. Obviously we get a great many so we prefer them not to stay longer than a day, but it is possible to stay in a B&B and visit for up to three days. Write to the school office for an appointment (address at the end).

How many pupils are there at Summerhill?

We generally run at about 65. This figure fluctuates. In 1995 we were 68, while in 1998 we are only 61.

What nationalities?

This term there are: 18 English, 14 German, 2 French, 3 American, 1 Korean, 9 Taiwanese, and 13 Japanese.
