5. There were two strange men. Uncle Abe was surprised as he never (to see) them. They (to tell) Uncle Abe that they (to be going) to move his furniture out of the house and they (to be going) to put Uncle Abe in jail.

6. At first Uncle Abe (to want) to go to Luther Bolick. He (to think) that his master (to defend) him. But when he (to learn) that it (to be) Luther Bolick who (to order) to put him in jail, he (can) not believe his ears. He never (to threaten) to harm his master. He never (to do) a thing like that in his life. He (to work) for him ever since he (to be) twenty years old.

7. The sheriff (to feel) sorry for the old Negro and his wife, but he (can) do nothing. Luther Bolick (to drive) to the courthouse early that morning and (to get) the papers for eviction and arrest.

8. When Uncle Abe’s eldest son Henry learnt about that he went to a lawyer. But the lawyer (to refuse) to take his father’ case. There (to be) no money in it. Henry (to be) in despair. He (to understand) that it (to be) because they (to be) coloured. They (to have) no rights in that country.
