ON A HIGHER LEVEL.

Young people have the opportunity to go on to higher education in a university, polytechnic or college, provided they have good “A” level exam results or good passes in vocational qualification like BTEC national diploma.

Higher education courses usually last three years (or four years in “sandwich” courses involving a year spend in industry or in another EC country, for example). Most higher education students receive some financial support from LEAs, with the rest of their money made up through parental support or through the Studenten Loans Company set up by central government to provide subsidized loans for students. In certain cases large companies sponsor students through their degree courses. The Armed Forces also sponsor selected students through University Cadetships and Bursaries.

The Open University is a little different, because it relies on distance-learning. Prospective students don’t require any conventional academic qualifications to enroll, but the standards of Open University degrees are as high as at other universities.

With the single European market opened for business, there are increasing opportunities for British students to study and work for periods in European Community countries. For example: The European Community Action Scheme for Mobility of University students (ERASMUS) enables increasing numbers of students in Britain’s higher educational establishments to study in other EC member states for periods of between 3 and 12 months as part of their degree courses. The Youth Exchange Centre (YEC) is a department of the British Council which promotes international youth exchanges through the provision of advice, information, training and grants. YES is the British national agency for the European Community funded programme, Youth in Europe, which promotes exchanges within the EC, the of Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe the USA and Japan. YEC provides grants to young people aged 15 to 25. Priority is given to groups of young people who would not normally have the opportunity for such an international experience. All groups of young people are eligible for support provided they meet the YEC’s basic criteria. British higher education have built up a strong reputation by offering high-quality tuition, maintaining low student-staff ratios, and providing the Kinds of courses and qualifications in demand.
