In contrast with genuinely original periphrasis which is an element of the individual style of a writer, and consequently is created in the process of writing, periphrastic synonyms exist in the language in the form of phraseological units. They are easily understood without any context.
Figurative periphrasismay be subdivided into
1) metaphorical periphrasis which is based on metaphor.
2) metonymical periphrasis which is based on metonymy.
The meaning of a stylistic periphrasis can be properly understood only in the given context. Sometimes however, the periphrasis is too involved for the reader to understand even in the context. In such case the writer provides the periphrasis with a key.
Sometimes the meaning of the periphrasis is used on mythodological, historical, biblical or literary allusions: "I hope it won't lead you to reject the offered olive branch..." (biblical allusion, to offer olive branch means to offer peace); "In this mood he reached the Mecca of his hopes". The meaning of Mecca of his hopes is used instead of the proper noun "Newmarket" where the character, a horse-lover, hopes to buy a new horse.
(7) Represented speech
Represented speech combines lexical and syntactical peculiarities of colloquial and literary speech. It gained widespread popularity especially in the 20th century, allowing the writer in seemingly objective manner to lead the reader into the inner working of human mind.
