III. Articulation of Diphthongs and Triphthongs

[әu] mixed mid-open rounded.While pronouncing the nucleus, the bulk of the tongue is in the back part of the mouth cavity. During the pronunciation of the glide the bulk of the tongue is raised to the soft palate but not as high as for the Russian [у]. The lips are rounded but not protruded.

[OI] back open rounded. While pronouncing the nucleus, the bulk of the tongue is in the back of the mouth cavity and very low, but not as long as for the vowel [I], then the tongue is raised in the direction of [I].

[au] front-retracted open unrounded. While pronouncing the nucleus the bulk of the tongue is in the back part of the mouth cavity. During the pronunciation of the glide, the tongue moves higher and back in the direction of [u] without reaching it.

[aI] front open unrounded. First the bulk of the tongue is in the front part of the mouth cavity, it is flat, the tip of the tongue touches the lower teeth, the lips are slightly spread, and then the tongue is raised to the hard palate.

[eI] front mid-open unrounded. The bulk of the tongue is in the front part of the mouth cavity, then the tongue moves in the direction of [I].

[Iә] front close unrounded. The bulk of the tongue is in the front part of the mouth cavity, then the tongue moves towards the center in the direction of [ә].

[eә] front mid-open unrounded. The bulk of the tongue is in the front part of the mouth cavity, the middle of the tongue is mid-way between the position of [e] and [a]. In pronouncing the glide, the bulk of the tongue moves back to the position for the neutral [ә].

[uә] back-advanced close slightly rounded. The bulk of the tongue is in the back part of the mouth cavity, the back of the tongue is raised as high as for the vowel [u]. In pronouncing the glide, the tongue moves down to the position of the vowel [ә].

[aIә], [auә] these sound combinations consist of diphthongs and the neutral [ә]. The middle element is pronounced not so distinctly.
