Ex.4. & Read the interview and discuss with your groupmate whose side you are on. Speak on advantages and disadvantages of heavy metal.

ROSANNA Q: Do you like heavy metal? A: No. Not really. Q: Why don’t you like it? A: Well, I don’t like this music very much. I suppose some of the music’s alright but it’s not very easy to listen to, isn’t it? Q: What is your negative impression of heavy metal’s image? A: Negative people who look horrible. They just want to show how tough and macho they are. They seem to think they look irresistible to women! Q: So, you just don’t like their appearance? A: No, its more than that. I think their image and attitude is unpleasant. They try to shock people by being disgusting. Q: What do you mean when you say “disgusting”? A: A lot of the things they do are in bad taste. Also, the names of some of the groups and records are horrible too. Q: What about the lyrics of heavy metal songs? A: I’m not sure if many of them have very prominent lyrics but some of the lyrics seem quite offensive. Q: What type of music do you listen to and why? A: I like a lot of different things. I like jazzfunk because it sounds good. Also, you can dance to it or relax with it. I also listen to quite a lot of classical music. Q: So, you never listen to heavy metal? A: No and neither do my friends. Though there are some people in my class who listen to it, I never do. Q: Do you play any musical instrument yourself? A: Yes, I play the violin. I’ve played it since I was two years old. I’m in the orchestra and we have been on our tour all over the world.

TOM Q: Do you like heavy metal? A: Yes, I do. The phrase 'heavy metal' includes a massive variety of groups. I especially like heavy metal that was recorded after 1989. Q: What do you like about heavy metal? A: I like a lot of things about it. Firstly, I think that some of the best guitarists in the world play in heavy metal groups. Q: What about the lyrics? A: Yes, I think there are some really good lyrics that are very pensive. Obviously, there are different songs for different moods. The songs that are angry or loud are good for expressing frustration or releasing energy. Some of the ballads and anthems are really emotional. The most important thing for me is the music. Though I like the lyrics, the music takes precedence. Most heavy metal groups write their own songs. It’s better than singing another version of an old song like Wet, Wet, Wet often do. Q: What about the heavy metal image? A: I think it's changing. I admit that I don't really like the image of long hair and leather trousers. I think it's a bit old-fashioned, but on the whole, I like the image of modern heavy metal groups. They are not as sexist as the old groups and they look better. Q: So, you think the old heavy metal groups were bad? A: No. I think they were good too but in a different way. Q: Do you think the old heavy metal was in bad taste or a bad influence? A: No. Groups like Judas Priest were good. They were completely original at the time and just did what they wanted to do. Though some people think heavy metal might influence people to do stupid things, I think that's rubbish.
