Approximately 400 million people speak English as their first language. About the same number use it as a second language. It is the language of aviation, international sport and pop music. Nearly 50 % of all the companies in Europe communicate with each other in English. They use English for their meetings, letters, telexes. 75 % of the world’s radio stations broadcast in English and more than half of the world’s periodicals are printed in English. It is an official language in 44 countries, where it is used in education, administration and for communication between speakers of other languages. In many others it is a language of business, commerce and technology. English is the language of modern computing. Because the internet makes the world a smaller place, the value of having a common language has been greatly increased. This enhanced the importance of English as a second language. Science and medicine are now completely international, scientists are trying to answer the same questions. This will no doubt continue, although the proposition that all other languages will die out is absurd…
