Economy

Bashkortostan has been a centre for oil production since 1930 and more recently for Russia's refining industry. It has also been a key producer and exporter of petrochemicals and chemical products. Engineering is another key sector, composed of oil and chemical machine-building, machine-tool building and vehicle construction.

Bashkortostan also has a developing ferrous metal industry. The forestry and timber processing industries are also being developed in the republic. Forests cover 39% of the territory. The Republic has a growing textile industry which includes cotton and wool fabrics, natural and artificial leather. The food industry is composed of large sugar refineries, a number of tinned meat and dairy facilities, factories producing beer, spirits, soft drinks and mineral water.

Agriculture

The Republic is adopting a controlled approach to the development of its agricultural infrastructure. It has land reserves of 8 million hectares, 5 million of which are arable and is among Russia’s top producers of grains, potatoes, meat and sugar beet.

Certain districts in Bashkortostan are suitable for growing potatoes and vegetables in the amounts sufficient to fully satisfy the requirements of urban dwellers. Dairy plants are located in all industrial centres.

There are several sugar plants and a number of other food companies processing vegetables, fruit and berries.

Bashkortostan is also a major area for poultry farming and livestock breeding. Every year the republic accumulates large amounts of raw leather materials. But the major portion of them is brought by entrepreneurs from other republic and regions.

In terms of gross agricultural output republic ranks sixth in the Russian Federation and first in the Urals economic region.
