USED TO   We use used to + infinitive to refer to past habits or states. In such cases used tocan be replaced by the past simple with no change in meaning. I used to like jazz but now I like rock. I used to go to jazz clubs every week. We do not need to use a time expression with used to. In the above examples we can also use the Past Simple in the time expression. I liked jazz when I was younger but now I like rock. I went to jazz clubs when I was at college. We cannot use used to when something happened only once: I went to a rock concert last night. (NOT used to go) BE USED TO / GET USED TO be/get used to + noun/pronoun/-ing form They are used to hot weather. (They are accustomed to hot weather. – present) I’m used to getting up early. (Mary is becoming accustomed to life in the city. – present) Simon had never lived in a tropical country before, but he quickly got used to it. (He became accustomed to it. – past) They willsoon get used to cooking their own meals. (They will become accustomed to cooking their own meals. – future)

17 The writer Margaret Forster is talking about being fifty. Read the text and answer the following questions.

1 When Margaret stayed at home in the past, what did she do?

2 When she stays at home now, what does she do?

3 What was she like in her twenties and her thirties?

4 Did she often use to scream in the middle of Oxford Street?

5 Was it difficult for her to write in the past?

6 Is it difficult for her to write now?

I haven't changed my idea of a good time very much over the years. I used to enjoy staying in with a new novel and a really good apple, and now I enjoy staying in with a new novel and a glass of wine.

I used to behave very badly in my twenties. I remember once I screamed in the middle of Oxford Street and all the cars suddenly stopped. In my thirties I was too tired to find the energy to scream.

It used to be very difficult to write. I wanted to be a mother, a writer and a wife and do everything myself. Now I can write all day if I want to. (From Male and Female)
