Animal metaphors and similes References to animal appear in many expressions and idioms in English. A simile is a direct comparison made with like or as, while a metaphor is a comparison that is not stated in the comparative form. Verbs describing animal behavior can be used as colorful descriptions of human actions. One type of animal metaphor is made from the words for animal groups. Different types of animals have different words to describe their groups, and some of these group words have a corresponding verb form. For example: a flock of birds, to flock a herd of cattle, to herd a swarm of insects, to swarm a school of fish a pack of wolves These verb forms can be applied to people, to show actions that are similar to the animals’: The enthusiastic fans swarmed around the rock star. The classroom monitor herded the students out when the fire alarm sounded. Families are flocking to that new amusement park.
