Hints for choosing a proper school.

Don’t:

– Be overly impressed by a glossy prospectus

– Let your own fulfilled or unfulfilled school days be an influence

– Forget to pick up a copy of the school magazine

– Be put off by shirts not tucked in or ties at half-mast

– Forget that you are the customer - and the customer is always right

– Hesitate to ask a local minicab driver what he thinks about the pupils

– Be swept off your feet by exam results

– Allow the architecture to sway you too much

– Forget to ask the head how long he or she intends to be in the post

Do:

– Talk to as many teachers and students as possible

– Ask about pastoral care

– Examine notice boards and classroom walls

– Watch how pupils react when the head passes them in the corridor

– Make sure you know the student / staff ratio

– Ask the average age of staff

– Stay for lunch if it’s offered

– Ask how discipline is maintained

– Look at as many rooms as possible at a boarding school

– Ask to see the school’s holiday reading list
