DISCUSSION OF THE TEXT

1. The extract presents a description of London full of illumination, noise and movement. What language means contribute to the bright illumination? (Pay special attention to epithets, metaphors)

2. How is the idea of noise and movement brought home to the reader? Point out stylistic devices (metaphor, simile, epithets, repetition, onomatopoeia and climax).

3. How is the dynamic quality of the description enforced?

4. The wealth of London finds its embodiment in the enumeration of goods displayed in shop windows. What means back it up and stress the quality of the variety of goods?

5. Nicholas and his fellow-travellers were struck by the wealth contained in the shops of London. How is that made obvious?

6. The reader is made to understand that the goods were of high quality and could meet the demands of the most choosy person. Point out high-flown words pertaining to this idea.

7. The reader gets the impression that all layers of society could be well provided for in London shops. Find substantivized adjectives that are in keeping with the idea. Point out means that serve to create a generalizing effect.

8. The concluding paragraph lends a different mood to the description – that of contrast of luxury and poverty. What stylistic devices make the contrast glaring? Note metonymies, metaphors, similes, antitheses, parallel constructions, climax.

9. Is the syntactic structure of the extract in keeping with Dickens’s style of description. Point out complicated complex sentences. Study their function.
