Words Easily Mispronounced or ConfusedSome English words are often mispronounced or confused by language learners as one spelling can have different sound, and the same sound can have different spellings. The following problems often arise. I. Silent letters tlisten, castle, glisten, whistle, hasten, bristle, fasten, mistletoe, whistle, soften, Christmas; bplumber, debt, thumb, doubt, comb, subtle, lamb, dumb, tomb, numb, climb, womb, debtor; ppsychic, psychiatry, pneumatic, receipt, pseudonym, psychology, cupboard; lwould, should, calm, half, palm, walk, salmon, chalk; h honour, honourable, honest, hour, hourly, heir, heiress; k knee, knife, know, knob, knowledge, knot, knit;
Here are a number of other words which are often mispronounced. apostrophe recipe plough catastrophe hiccough enough shepherd muscle sword interesting handkerchief height
II. Homonyms Homonyms can be subdivided intohomographsand homophones. Homographs are words which are written in the same way but have different meaning and may be pronounced differently. Compare bow [bau] «поклон» and bow[bqu] «бант, лук». Homophones are words with different meanings which are pronounced in the same way but are spelt differently, e. g.: bow [bau] «поклон» and bough[bau] «сук».
Here are some examples of homographs. We live only a few miles from the coast. [lIv] It was the first interview I’d done in front of a liveaudience. [laIv] I tried to lead the discussion back to the main issue. [lJd] Lead pipes are dangerous. [led] The weather was hot, without a breath of wind. [wInd] The river winds its way between two meadows. [waIdz] He wound the wool into a ball. [waund] The wound healed slowly. [wHnd] We sat in a row at the back of the room. [rqu] He had a row with his son. [rau] Can I use your phone? [jHz] The software is designed for use in schools. [jHs] Let’s have the party at my house. [haus] The galleries house a lot of works of modern art. [hauz] Sow the seeds in rows. [squ] The piglets are taken from the sow to be fattened for market. [sau]
