1. One of the common beliefs about religious people is that they're more honest, more charitable, and more likely to reach out to those in need than are nonreligious people. A review of research, however, finds that this seemingly logical connection does not exist. For example, in a study of cheating among college students, religious beliefs bore little relationship to honesty; in fact, atheists were less likely to cheat than those who identified themselves as religious. Other studies have found that religious people were not any more likely than others to help those in need – for example, to give time to work with retarded children or to comfort someone lying in the street. What assumptions about people's behavior can you make from knowing only that they are very religious?

2. Jack is scheduled to give a speech on careers in computer technology to a group of high school students who have been forced to go to a Saturday "career day" and to attend at least three of the speeches. The audience is definitely an unwilling group. What advice can you give Jack to help him deal with this type of audience?

3. Jill wants to give a speech on television talk shows and wants to include biographical information on some of the talk show hosts. What sources might Jill go to in order to get authoritative and current information on these hosts? What sources might she go to in order to get "fan" type information? What advice would you give Jill for distinguishing the two types of sources and information?

4. Prepare and deliver a two-minute speech in which you do one of the following:

· evaluate the topics of recent talk shows against the criteria for a

worthwhile and appropriate topic

· explain the cultural factors operating in this class that need to be

taken into consideration by the speaker selecting a topic and

purpose

· explain a particularly strong belief that you hold

· describe members of your class in terms of how willing, favorable,

and knowledgeable you believe them to be about any specific topic

or speaker

· describe the audience of a popular magazine or television show or

movie

· explain the value of one reference book, website, database,

listserv, or newsgroup for research in public speaking
