The term communication competencerefers to your knowledge of the social aspects of communication. Communication competence includes knowledge of such factors as the role of context in influencing the content and form of communication messages for example, the knowledge that in certain contexts and with certain listeners one topic is appropriate and another is not. Knowledge about the rules of nonverbal behavior – for example, the appropriateness of touching, vocal volume, and physical closeness – is also part of communication competence. The term communication competence is also taken to include your ability to apply this knowledge in communicating. So when you read about communication competence, realize that it includes both an understanding of how communication works and the ability to use this understanding in communicating effectively. Keep in mind, however, that communication competence is culture specific; the way communication works and the elements that make it effective differ from one culture to another.
