When we hear the sound form)of a word we connect it with the concept which it denotes and through it with the. referent. The meaning of the word can be connected with referent. But the sound form is not identical
with itsdmeaning.' This can be easily рrovedЪу comparing the sound forms of different languages convey the same meaning, c.f. The concept of a structure for human habitation is expressed in English by the word house, in Ukrainian - by the word дім, in Russian - by дом. It can also be proved by comparing identical sound forms that possess different meaning in different languages, e.g. [kot] in English (cot) means 'a child's bed', in Russian (kot) means 'a cat'. The difference between meaning and concept can be traced in the semantic range of verbs of motion in different languages. .
Functional approach maintains the idea that the meaning of linguistic unit may be studied only through its relations to either concept or referent, e.g. a net > to net. These words belong to different parts of speech and express different meanings which are understood from the context.
Functional and referential approaches to meaning are to be used together as they are not taken separately.
