What Is Tourism?

Tourism industry like any other kind of industry is a complicated developing system. To understand how it works, one should understand what are its parts and what people working in this industry do.

Tourism is the business providingservices for people who are traveling -on their holidays for leisureor business purposes.Tourism has become a popular global leisure industry. It's the world's fastest growingindustry. Its activities are runninghotels, resorts,bars, tour operators,cruise ships, and other structures.

Tourism nowadays is the main industry for many countries, such as Egypt[ircfei't] Greece[gits], Thailand[tailaend] and many others. Most people there work in tourism providing different services, such as transportation (airliners, cruise ships, taxies, etc.), hospitalityservices (hotels, resorts, etc.), entertainment (casinos[ka'simsuz], concert halls, theatres, etc.)

Tourism has a long history. Wealthy people have always traveled to other parts of their countries or to other countries to see great buildings, works of art,leam languages, understand new cultures and taste different cuisines.People began to use the word "tourism" at the beginning of the 19th century.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was foundedon the recommendation of theUN. It is based in Madrid[mad'nd], Spain['spein]. This organization promotestourism all over the world and works with statistical information on international tourism. Most countries of the world are its members. English is one of the official languages of the UNWTO.

Since 1980, 27 September is World Tourism Day. On that day in 1970 the UNWTO was established.The purpose of this day is to show the role of tourism in the world and to demonstrate how important it is in political, economic, social and cultural life of our planet.

The UNWTO names 10 most visited countries of the world. They are France[frarns], the USA, Spain, China[faina], Italy, Great Britain, the Ukraine[ju(:)'krein], Turkey, Germany and Mexico['meksikau]. Paris is the most visited city on the planet. About 15,6 million tourists visit it every year.
