PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW

One of the biggest mistakes that a job applicant can make is to assume that there is no more need for preparation once the first interview is complete. (1) In fact, a job applicant will typically have to prepare for and complete two or three interviews before he or she actually receives a position. (2) As a result, it is important for an individual to prepare for every interview that he or she is required to attend. (3) However, it is important to note that there may be some differences between the way that an individual should prepare for an initial interview and the way that an individual should prepare for an interview that appears later in the process. (4)

The first thing to remember about a second interview is that it is usually a good idea for a job applicant to not only look good, but also to look the part. This means that you should consider the way that the interviewer and the other employees in the building were dressed while you were in the first interview. (5) It will allow you to choose clothing that is similar to what the interviewer and the other employees were wearing, which will make it easier for the interviewer to envision you as part of the company. Do not rely on what other people tell you about the dress code of the company or any rules which once were an established order. At the same time remember that the decade, or wider, the time frame in which a given style or pattern of behaviour was popular provides the key to explaining it. (6) The second thing to remember about preparing for an interview is that it is important to tailor everything to the target. This means that you should prepare a list of questions and answers that are specifically related to the skills that the position or the company requires. This will allow you to emphasize the attributes and skills that appeared to be important to the interviewer in the first interview. (7) The third and final thing to remember about preparing for a second interview is that it is always a good idea to do more research. This means that you should use the internet, your local library, and other similar resources to gather information about anything that may have come up in the first interview. (8)

1. In paragraph 1, choose the number (1-4) to indicate where the following sentence would be added to the passage. This is because an applicant may be required to complete a number of interviews in order to obtain a position so it is not safe for an individual to assume that his or her preparations will end with the first interview. Where would this sentence best fit?

2. In paragraph 2, choose the number (5-8) to indicate where the following sentence would be added to the passage. This will further allow you to appear knowledgeable about and interested in these topics if they come up again. Where would this sentence best fit?

3. Which of the following best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in paragraph 2? Incorrect answer choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.

A Company styles are easiest to decode in the time frame when they are popular.

B The system that surrounds popular company styles changes at least once every decade.

C The popular styles of a decade provide a key for understanding that period of time.

D To understand a given style the company adheres to one must understand the period of time when it was popular.
