New Types of Schools

The quality of education in gymnasiums, colleges, and lyceums is not worse than that provided by IB programme schools. Besides, it is much more affordable for the most of the population. It is rather prestigious to study in these types of school. It is considered that they provide more possibilities for child's development. In fact, the gymnasiums are very much different from the traditional schools. They provide liberal-profile education: advanced aesthetic, law, humanitarian, economic, political, and other education. Besides, the gymnasiums can use both their own programmes and the adapted ones. Other words, the gymnasia education can develop all children's talents. The gymnasia's graduate students have big possibilities to choose the higher education institutions.

The lyceums also create favourable conditions for the overall development of a personality, but in the first place they provide high quality profile education. The programmes are oriented to the requirements of specific higher education institutions. By the way, the lyceums were the first where the practice was introduced that the grades at the final exams are also considered as the entrance exams grades. Today when things change fast, the lyceums and gymnasiums also change. Each institution has a priority focus. There appeared poly-profile, linguistic, arts, and Kazakh language lyceums and gymnasiums. The names of some schools reflect their focus priorities: classic, physics-mathematical, experimental, humanitarian, technical, Russian-Kazakhstan, international.

Of course the choice of the educational institutions in Kazakhstan is great. Today there are 165 public schools and 60 private schools in Almaty. Almost every other school can be considered innovative. This includes 20 lyceums and 35 gymnasiums. The Educational Department controls all the schools.

Where to study? This is a rhetorical question of our childhood, because each of us went to the school located close to the house. We were enrolled there in advance by some people from the municipal educational departments. And it was also convenient. It was not a usual practice to choose the school arid besides there was not much of a choice: all schools were similar to each other. But the things change and schools change. Today a public school does not meet everybody's expectations. Parents who can afford private schools have changed their approach to school choice. How not to get lost in these multiple possibilities offered by the private schools? People say, in this school they teach 5 languages, in that school give caviar for lunch and teach play tennis, in this school there are neither grades, nor lessons, the children only play games and in that school they provide such a training that the graduates can enter the mechanical-mathematical institute without entrance exams...

In those countries where the private schools exist for more than 10 years, some parents when choosing a school look at the list of celebrated graduates. But for most people the most important criterion is place in the rating among other schools and the grades at the final exams received by the students. The higher the average grade is the higher is the rating of the school among other schools. These ratings are conducted by the largest newspapers and magazines (for example “Times” and “Independent” in Great Britain, “Shtern” and “Shpiegel” in Germany) about once in a year and are based on the official statements of the schools.

We should admit that private schools as well as higher institutions are far from this rating system. They are still covered with obscurity. When choosing the private school parents in Kazakhstan often have to rely on the ads in mass media, which is not always true, or get information from other parents. The private school fees in Kazakhstan range from $ 70 to $500 per month, depending on the conditions available at the school for children's development and a number of educational services.

The standard set of educational services includes transportation to school and back. 2 - 4 meals day, medical services, sports and other hobby groups. But this is not the most important in private schools. The most important criterion is school's orientation on the requirements of each personality. As a rule the classes are not big - not more than 10 - 15 students. Individual approach allows to better learning of obligatory disciplines stated in the national education plan, which in its turn leaves more time for introduction of non-traditional disciplines. Many parents are excited about the comfortable environment in the schools. There is no pressing tempo of the lessons and striving for good grades. The psychological atmosphere and relations between classmates are also very much different from those in the public schools.
