International Programmes in Kazakhstan

The education that meets the international standards became a reality in Kazakhstan partially due to the international educational programmes and technologies that are widely introduced in the schools. These are, for example, European programmes of critical thinking, civil law, applied economics, ”Street Law” Programmes, programmes of intellectual games “Odyssey of intellect”, ”Debates” and others.

A novelty of this educational season is the Programme of 12-year International Bachelor school course. 10 years ago, this programme was unknown in our country and only three years ago it made first shy steps in our schools. The International Bachelor Programme is very specific educational programme. The approach to the educational process is very much different from that of the traditional education, which lists this programme as alternative education. Major emphasis of this programme is self-education of a student, his interaction with the environment and society. The teaching plans are focused on projecting skills and practical application of the received knowledge. Another specific thing about this programme is that the senior students are taught in one of the foreign languages: English, Spanish or French. The experts foresee that the said languages will be widely used in future. And among those three English is rated the first. Internet is the most significant factor in development and spreading of the English language. According to the statistic data provided by the Organization of International Bachelor Programme located in Geneva, 90% of this course is taught in English, 6% - in French, and 4% - in Spanish. This programme mostly for those who plan to continue their education in the leading universities of the world, and the IB diploma is recognized by almost all the countries, which makes the programme attractive for the Kazakhstani students. For example, the universities in the USA, Canada. Great Britain, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia admit the IB certified students without any additional conditions. In some countries, for example, in the Republic of South Africa the university entrance requirements are lower than that of the IB Programme.

Today almost 650 schools in 80 countries in the world certify their graduate students with IB diplomas. This year Kazakhstan was added to this list: one of the schools in Almaty was certified and received the official authority to teach this programme and issue the diplomas. It is obvious that the IB programme is good, but it is very expensive. The IB education is chargeable and expensive both for the schools and parents. Introduction of the programme requires the following modifications: firstly, upgrade of the libraries, class rooms, laboratories for the natural-scientific researches etc; secondly, preliminary foreign language training; thirdly, preparation of the instructors who would learn the IB philosophy, in introduction of new positions related to studying in foreign language, and bringing in “not typical” for schools experts.

In practice, in many countries due to flexibility of the IB programme and its combination with the national programmes, the new approaches were developed. This solution is the most acceptable for the schools in Kazakhstan.
