General Consonantal Changes
Talking about foundation of consonantal system in English, the following general points are worth noting in OE:
- there were no voiced stops (phonemically), but only fricatives;
- no palato-alveolar consonants like /∫/ or /t∫/;
- no phonemic velar nasal /ŋ/;
- there were long consonants (or geminates).
West Germanic Gemination (WGG)
A notable feature of the morphology of many OE verbs is the alternation of root-final single & double consonants:
e.g.: hyllan ‘hide’ / fullan ‘fill’ / settan ‘set’
