AT THE THEATRE

1. The first place, which associates with the word “performance”, is a theatre of course. Modern theatres are much the same everywhere in the world. Major performing arts are exposed to the audience in a variety of theatres. You can enjoy a fantastic performance in drama theatres, musical comedy theatres, opera and ballet houses, theatres of mimics and gesture, puppet theatres, shadow theatres, circuses, which are also theatres, variety theatres and philharmonics, where the audience listens to refined pieces of classical music. Throughout the ages, performers have been jugglers, mimes, minstrels, puppeteers, acrobats, clowns, singers, dancers, and amateur and professional actors. The first performers were most likely singers and dancers, as the first performances had no spoken dialogue.

2. Nowadays all theatres are specially designed buildings with acoustic effect, where plays, ballets, shows, musicals, operas and concerts are performed. But what is so much special about them all? To begin with they look grandeur and majestic outside and inside. You will never pass them by due to their architecture. There are no theatre buildings looking alike in the world. They are all unique.

3. The atmosphere inside will involve you into the world of true human dramas and comedies. Your first step into the theatre building through the entrance door into the hall and then into the theatre auditorium will open new prospects for you. A well-dressed audience, gathered in the theatre auditorium, will impress you by the sophisticated taste and manners and a magnificent crystal chandelier, hanging from the ceiling, will emphasize a refined atmosphere in the theatre.

4. But the performance on the stage will arrest your attention from the beginning, when the curtain rises till the end, when the curtain falls. You will experience all emotions of the characters on the stage, which are skillfully delivered by the acting cast of the talented actors and actresses. The scenery, the illumination of the stage will add to a general impression received from the performance.

5. To make the audience fascinated by the play or performance, it should be pretty well rehearsed a number of times. The dress-rehearsal is the final before a first night performance. If you want to get a ticket for a first night performance, be aware, that the whole house is usually fully booked beforehand and the tickets are extremely expensive. The most expensive seats are in the stalls, boxes and dress circles. The most affordable seats are always in the upper circles, the pit and the balcony. But in the case you will sit far and upper from the stage you will need theatre glasses to watch the expression on actors’ faces. You can borrow theatre glasses from the usher in the cloak-room for a small charge.

6. Take your time and unite with the public in the theatre while watching the play and showing your appreciation by applauding or crying out “Bravo!” or “Encore!”, presenting bouquets of flowers or giving a long-standing applause during a curtain call. The actors will be much grateful to you for your warm reception.

7. But if you have a desire to listen to a classical piece of music, you should visit a Philharmonic Society. There a symphony orchestra will perform a composition by a world-famous virtuoso, like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Chopin or others for you and will give you the chance to float the streams of mood, expressed in music.

8. Making a conclusion one can say that theatre is one of the oldest and most popular forms of entertainment in which actors perform live for an audience on a stage or in another space designated for the performance. The space set aside for performances, either permanently or temporarily, is also known as a theatre.
