In some cultures, small talk is an essential part of business; in others, it is seen as something separate from work, and people prefer to get down to business as quickly as possible. There is also, of course, considerable variation within each culture.

It simply refers to being friendly with your colleagues and business contacts, and showing an interest in their private lives. Again, for some people this is seen as vital to successful business; for others, private and professional lives should be kept separate.

Differences in style may include how much small talk people prefer, what topics they consider appropriate and inappropriate for small talk, and the extent to which they are prepared to open up and reveal something of themselves during small talk.

I. Greetings

Formal	Good morning. Good afternoon. Good evening.	Until lunch-time /12-2 p.m./ Until 5-6- p.m. Until 11 p.m.
Semi-formal	Morning. Afternoon. Evening. Hello.
Informal	Hi.

Formal	How are you? How are you getting on? I am very / fairly / quite well, thank you. Fine, thanks. Not too / so bad, thank you.
Semi-formal	All right, thank you (thanks).
Informal	O.K., thanks / familiar / A bit tired, otherwise all right.

Formal	And how are you? What about you?	- Not very / too well, I’m afraid. - Oh, dear, sorry to hear that.
Semi-formal	And you? How’s life?	I’m afraid, I’m not well today.
Informal	How are things with you?	I’ve got a bad cold.

II. Leavetaking

Pre-closing phrases

Formal	Well, I must be going (now) go (now). I’m afraid I must be going (now). It’s time I was going (off). I’d better be going. I must be off now. Well, I think I’d better go now.
Semi-formal	I’m in a bit of hurry. I must be off, I’m afraid. It’s been nice meeting you. Hope to see you again. Nice meeting you.
Informal	See you then / later. See you.

Closing phrases

Formal	Good-bye.
Semi-formal	(Good-)bye for now. Bye (then).
Informal	Bye-bye. Cheerio. All the best (when you are seeing your friend off). Good luck (before smb is going for an interview for a job or before smb is taking an examination).

If you want to be remembered to some other people (members of the family, friends, acquaintances), use this phrases:

Formal	(Please) give my (kind) regards to…	Thank you	I (certainly) will.
Semi-formal	Remember me to…
Informal	Give my love to…	Thanks

III. Forms of address

The most frequently used forms of address are:

Mister (Mr.)	To a man e.g. Mister Johnson, Mr. Smith
Mistress (Mrs.)	To a married woman e.g. Mrs. Green
Miss	To unmarried woman e.g. Miss Dee
Ms /miz/	To a woman not depending on her marital status e.g. Ms Lee
Sir	To a man	a) to unfamiliar people; b) to customers;
Madam	To a woman (ma’am)	c) to clients in a restaurant.
Officer	To a policeman
Father	To a priest
My Lord	To a peer, a bishop, a British judge
Professor	To a University teacher
Doctor (Dr)	1. To a medical doctor e.g. Doctor (use alone). 2. To a person with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Science (the surname is always included) e.g. Dr Brown
Ladies and Gentlemen	As a formal opening of a speech
