HOW TO SELECT AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. There is no doubt that a good command of English provides additional employment opportunities. The ideal way to master it is to go to the country of its origin, the United Kingdom. Every year about one million people from around the world travel to the United Kingdom (UK) to study English. The main incentive is the huge variety of courses to choose from. You are almost guaranteed to find one that fits your exact requirements. In this article we will discuss what you should consider when choosing a course, the accommodation options, the recommended methods of payment for your course, as well as advice on getting a visa from the British Embassy.

So, the first thing you should do is to choose the course you want and also decide in which part of the UK you want to study (i.e. England, Northern Ireland,-Scotland or Wales). Then collect information about as many schools as possible, located in the country/region you have chosen, and carefully compare the courses they offer. All English language schools offer general English classes. These aim to improve your grammar, vocabulary, and spoken English. In addition, you may wish to study a specialized course, such as Business English, English for Lawyers. English for Public Administrators, etc. However, you would normally need an advanced level of English in order to benefit from them. To help you with selecting the course the web site www.englishinbritain.co.uk was created. There you will find a database, which includes over 1,600 English language courses offered throughout the UK by more than 300 schools and colleges. On their web site you can search the comprehensive database, contact the schools and colleges, and book the course you want. If you don't have access to Internet you may contact the British Council, who can provide a lot of useful information (the telephone number of the British Council in Kyiv is (044) 462-0011). When choosing an English language course, always consider its cost, the cost of accommodation, and the level of teaching provided. The cost of a course in the UK depends .on its duration, the qualification offered, the number of students in the class, the location of the school, and other factors. The average price for a General English course is J 70-180 per week ($100-240). However, there are a number of cheaper courses that cost about J 100 per month ($145). For example, The Stanton School of English (www.stanton-school.co.uk) offers practice classes, which are held by cadet-teachers (trainee teachers). Therefore, they are less expensive than some others. Specialist courses are more expensive. However, they offer the opportunity to master English relevant to your profession. An example of a school where you can find an extensive list of specialist courses is The London School of English mttp://www.londonschool.com). English lessons for criminal lawyers. executives, and another professionals are given there.

" Your choice of the school may also depend on availability and quality of accommodation. Most English language schools will provide you with accommodation, if requested. It is possible to stay at dormitory of a university, at a hotel, or with a family (browse the web site of the school in order to find information on accommodation options available).

After you have chosen a specific course, the application form maybe requested and sent via e-mail. Most schools will require payment in advance. This may be done by means of a credit or debit card, bankcheque, travellers' cheque, or banking transfer. Once you have applied for your course and paid for your studies the school will send you an official admission letter stating your name, dates of studies, the type of course, and the amount paid. You will need this letter in order to apply for a visa in the British Embassy.

To get a visa, fill in an application form and submit it along with the official letter from the school and all other required documents.
