The Ages of man as seen by Fleet Street may begin with a ‘miracle baby’ which becomes a ………., grows into a ………., ‘tot’ and then a ……….. If his parents are divorced and disputing ………., he may turn into a ‘tug-of-love’ baby, toddler, or kid with horrific suggestions of two people tearing out his arms as in a tug-of-war. Schoolchildren are sometimes described as school ‘students’, especially in the left-wing and sociological press while still ‘teenagers”. Girl teenagers who become pregnant are ‘gymslip mums’ when they are still at school, but mere ‘mums-to-be’ as soon as they have left, even at the age of fifteen and still wearing their gymslips. An ………. baby is a ‘love-child’, and the place in which it is thought to have been produced, a ‘love-nest’ - for love apparently thought never to enter into married relationships. A ‘boy’ becomes a ‘youth’ at about sixteen and a man at nineteen; but he may remain a ‘……….’ even into his seventies. Women can be called ‘girls’ into their mid-thirties and ‘girl-friends’ up to any age. When actors, actresses or ballet dancers are the subject of a story they remain ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ for ever. There are also ………. terms which can be made into almost any permutation, such as ‘teenage fathers’, ‘gymslip muggers’ or ‘singing bachelor’ etc. The subject’s marital or professional status (‘bachelor’, ‘businessman’, ‘housewife’, ‘divorcee’), his or her age, whether germane to the story or not – and , if a woman, her hair colour, breast, waist and hip measurements and some other indication of her attractiveness, with carefully graded euphemisms (‘blonde, vivacious have-a-go housewife, Eileen Grunge, 38, 44, 49’) - are considered essential information. So are the existence and number of children, if any; and even the knowledge that the subject’s children have proved their own ………. (‘battling grandfather of four, Bert Snodgrass, 73’). But from the age of sixty to sixty-five Fleet Street Man’s decline is rapid - into plain ………., sans teeth, sans dignity, sans everything.
