Family relations

1) Divide the class up to four groups, according to their position in the family: eldest, youngest, middle or only child. Each group discusses what it was like having that particular role in the family. Try to remember precise events that reflect parents’ attitudes, relationships with brothers and sisters etc.

2) Provide your comments on the situations below. Compare your opinion with the comments of a professional psychologist.

Situation 1

My seven-year-old daughter has become a vegetarian. I thought it was a fad and she’d be bored of it after a few weeks, but it wasn’t to be. I’ve been told by a friend that children shouldn’t be vegetarians because they need the protein in meat while they’re still growing. But another friend, who is a vegetarian, says that’s not true, as long as you eat foods in the correct combinations. Who should I believe? And should I discourage my daughter?

Situation 2

I have two boys (four-and-a-half and nearly three) and they fight constantly. The oldest has always had a vicious streak, but it’s getting worse with age. The fighting occurs mainly between the two of them, but the oldest has started punching and biting me - and the younger one copies. I have tried smacking, putting them in their rooms and taking prized possessions away. Everything. Since the oldest one started playgroup, things have improved slightly, but the problem is still there. Sometimes, the whole day is constant battles and I’m reduced to tears by the end. We live on a small Scottish island, so there are very few activities to amuse them. I know I should be calm, but after four years of this, I am reduced to exhaustion and yelling. Please help.

Situation 3

My 12-year-old wants to go into town with her friends on Saturday afternoons. Even though she is quite grown up for her age, I still think she’s too young, and I don’t want her to get into the habit of wasting Saturdays hanging around the shops. Most of her friends have much more money than she does, and I can’t see what fun it will be watching them spend money. How should I go about persuading her that there are many better things to do with her time?
