Oh if someone sings a song with a simple Rhythm

Just a song where is feeling show

And if someone feels the same about the simple song

Oh sometimes you can hear them say

Music brings you Happiness and Madness

But it also, also hitsyour soul

[Chorus]

Let the music hit your soul

Let the music make control

Let the music give you the power to

move any mountain

If someone plays piano with some minor chords

So melodic and endearing, too

Oh if someone plays guitar with the old piano

And maybe you can hear them say

Music gives you Happiness and Madness

But it also it alsohits your soul

Ex.2. & Rearrange the passages of the text in the logical order (the first is 1). Read the text and the tasks that follow.

The role of music in our life

1. Music as an art is very rich and its treasures are inexhaustible. It has become an integrated part of our life.

Another problem that worries English and American doctors is the habit of listening to a walkman. Recently an ear specialist checked 40 passengers on the New-York subway. They were all wearing a walkman. He found the sound volume was between 95-120 decibels.

Music influences us all variously because we all have different physical, mental and emotional tendencies. If a thousand persons hear the same music each will probably have different impressions. Each person will absorb from the music the kind of feeling natural for him.

Music enriches our sensations and emotions; it also reflects our ideas, feelings and dreams. We can be affected in many different ways by the same composer. For example, Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony inspires heroic action; his Moonlight Sonata has a sublime stillness of spirit which brings into play our deepest emotions and longing for the Ideal.

However, music can be destructive as well as vital for our health. Doctors have found out that 8 hours of listening to noises above 90 decibels results in a temporary loss of hearing and only 2 hours spent in 100 decibel noise causes permanent damage. (A decibel (dB) is a unit, which measures how loud a sound is). Here are the decibel counts for some everyday activities.

SOUND DECIBEL LEVEL (dB)

whispering 30

normal conversation 60

busy street 70

noisy factory 90

jet plane overhead 100

thunder 110

pop concert (near the speakers) 120

A sound level of 120 dB causes pain.

Some kinds of music vitalize us – others depress and fill our hearts with melancholy. Probably music can quicken our heartbeat and energize every physical function in us. It can make us healthier and more energetic. It is a source of great pleasure and inspiration for all of us. It is like a sip of fresh air in that cynic world of ours.

Ex.3.Decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F):

1. We are all the same that is why we have different impressions from the music we hear.

2. We can express our ideas and feelings through music.

3. Music plays a very important role in our life.

4. Music gives us only positive emotions.

5. Doctors are worried because English and American people walk too much.

6. The main idea of the text is that different music influences us differently.

“Music – the Drug of Choice for Britain’s Olympians”

Psychologists believe they have discovered why Britain has won so many medals at the Sydney Olympics: not drugs but music.

Dr Costas Karageoghis and his team of researchers at Brunel University in West London say that athletes can improve their performance by as much as 18 % by listening to the right sort of music.

A host of medal winners – including rowing gold James Cracknell, sprinters Katherine Merry and Darren Campbell, and boxing gold Audley Harrison – confirmed that music had helped them to win.

Dr Karageoghis has been researching the psychological effects of music in sport and exercise for over a decade, and has worked with some of the UK’s top athletes. He says different athletes need different music. “Some need songs that will relax them; others need songs that will ........1...... . Eitherway, the music should leave them feeling inspired”.

The key, he says, is the heart rate. Athletes who need to ……2….. before an event will listen to a song which is the same speed, or faster, than their heart rate. Those who feel anxious before competing will choose music with a tempo below their heart rate, ……3….. and ……4……… .

James Cracknell, who rowed to Olympic glory and into the record books with Steve Redgrave, Matthew Pinset and Tim Foster, said that listening to the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s album Blood Sugar Sex Magic was a crucial part of the preparation for the race.

“I was listening to that CD on my Discman until about an hour before we competed” he said. “The music’s vaguely aggressive and powerful, but it’s also familiar, so it serves a joint purpose. It makes you relax a bit, but also winds you up at the same time. It.......5........., which is very important”.

Katherine Merry, the 400m runner who won bronze at the Olympics, also cited music as a powerful influence on the quality of her performance. “I listen to soft soul[*] and R&B music like K-Ci and Jo Jo on the way to the track. It helps me ..............6................ In many ways, it is essential to a good and positive performance. You have ..........7.........., and music helps to do that.”

Olympic 200m silver medalistDarren Campbell agreed. “For an hour and a half between the Olympic semi-final and the final I just lay on a couch and listened to the same Craig David song, ‘Rendezvous’, over and over again. It helped me to focus. I could ............8......... so I couldn’t hear or be distracted by other people on the track”.

Dr Karageoghis is now working with Nike to make his research available to everyone. The sportswear company has adopted his concept to create the PSA (Personal Sports Audio) player, a tiny device which plays digital music files from the Internet. Athletes can visit the web site www. nike. com/ nikedigital and download a musical package before playing it on their PSA while exercising.
