Ex.1.Music is a language, which speaks to everyone – from the day we are born; we hear music of some kind most days of our lives. But there are as many kinds of music as there are different languages, and it is impossible to describe them all.

Recollect all types of music that you know and add their names to the mind map below.

Classical

Ex.2. Look through the brief descriptions of different types of music and guess their names. Add some more information.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is serious Western European music from the Middle Ages to the present (1500 to today) and it was often written for a large orchestra, e.g. a symphony, or for a small group of players, e.g. a quartet or a duet. Many instruments can be used to play it. A lot of music was also written to be sung as opera.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This classical – rather than pop – music is for small groups of instruments. It was so called because it began as music for enjoyment in chambers, or rooms, in the home. Composers wrote different types of music for theatres or churches. Today performances of this type of music often take place in concert halls.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The essential ingredient of this type of music is improvisation – the musicians make up some or all of the music as they play it. Black musicians created the very firstmusic at the beginning of the 20th century in New Orleans.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Music with a strong, steady beat helps soldiers march in step. Today the bands, playing this music, can be also met in American high schools or at the stadiums to entertain the crowds at halftime and on special occasions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was originally black country music which also came from the Southern States at the beginning of this century. It is slow, usually sad music which is often sung by one person with a guitar.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This developed from the Blues in America in the ‘40s. It became faster and more complex and used more instruments, e.g. saxophone, guitar, piano, drums. The music was often about city life and white musicians started playing it at once.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This developed from R&R in America, Britain and Europe in the 60s and is now in every country. The name is used for most commercial music, i.e. music we can hear on radio and buy on records. It is usually played by groups who often use electronic instruments and make videos to go with their record.
