SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Type of music Origin Instru-ments to play it Audience age group Pecu-liarities Its in-fluence Repre-sen-tatives

Ex.10.J Choose any type of music and basing on the information from the previous exercise and your background knowledge, fill in the following table and be ready to report on it.

Ex.11. JStep 1. Apart from formal music (classical, rock, pop, blues, etc.) there is music that can be found in the streets of a great metropolis or in a forest – i.e. informal music, which is a pattern of sounds produced by nature rather than by music instruments. Some people believe that all sounds can be music. Do you agree with them? ¯Listen to the recordings of natural music and identify them. Answer the following questions:

1) When and where can you hear informal music?

2) What effect does this music have on you?

3) What do you associate it with?

Step 2. & Read the text. What examples of natural music are described here? Give literary translation of the text. Do you believe that informal music can be inspiring as well as formal one? Give your arguments.

...“The rustling of leaves in the wind, the minute pattern of insect noises, the sound of a river or waterfall in the distance makes a complex design of sounds which is music to someone… The nightingale and the lark are glorious singers to almost everyone.

The sounds of the ocean have an immense range of rhythm and dynamics. On a calm day, the lapping of water against rock and sand is a kind of lyrical music. Another day, great waves will roll in and crash on the shore – their rhythm is asymmetric, but has something of the same depth of sound and hypnotic fascination as the great drums of Africa or Haiti. In a furious storm, the shrieking of the wind and the terrifying violence of the ocean make for some of us a music that is heroic and sublime. Wagner organized these sounds in rhythmic and tonaldesign inThe Flying Dutchman.

…To me almost all sound can have rhythmic and vibrational designs and patterns which are a kind of music.”

(Music for All of Us. L. Stokowskiy)

Step 3. ¯Listen to music pieces written by famous composers and write down what natural music they can be associated with. Do you know the name and the author of the pieces? In what way do you feel the music composed by musicians is superior or inferior to the music of nature?

Ex.12. JMake up dialogues:

1. Your father cannot stand rock music and he never listens to it. You try to convince him that rock is important in your life.

2. Your sister has just come back from the Concert Hall where she heard jazz music. It was the concert of a famous American jazz musician. She tries to describe you how much she enjoyed the concert, but you, being not a great lover of jazz, turn a deaf ear.

3. You are fond of Tchaikovsky’s music and are always ready to talk about it. Your friend wants to know more about it.
