A sound is presented in 6 by a sign, called a note and sounds of different lengths are shown by the notes of different shapes. All notes are organized into a 7 . The longest note in normal use is the 8 . Shorter notes in descending order of value are: minim, 9 , 10 , 11 , demisemiquaver (1/32) and hemidemisemiquaver (1/64).
A note may be lengthened by the use of the 12 or blind. This is a curved line which goes from the head of one note to the head of the next. We usually put a 13 at the beginning of the staff.
