History of the School

In the late 50s and early 60s, research into high electric power converters was initiated by Prof. G. V. Grabovetsky at the department of industrial electronics in the Novosibirsk Electrical Engineering Institute. Initially primary emphasis was placed on solving problems of AC and DC controlled electric drives for the needs of the national economy. In 1965, a branch research laboratory of converter facilities was set at the Faculty of Electronics. Prof. G. V. Grabovetsky headed the laboratory. Research was focussed on developing various types of converter circuits for electric drives and achieving the maximum speed of converter operation. Novel circuits and innovative approaches to the design and calculation of complex power electronics facilities were proposed, their parameters were optimised and control algorithms were developed. Work on semiconductor systems generating electric power for aircraft of various applications and research into nonconventional power engineering started at that time. A branch research laboratory of electrical equipment for aircraft was created on the initiative of the Ministry of Aircraft Industry of the USSR and the Ministry of Higher Education of the RSFSR. Assoc. Prof. S. A. Kharitonov was appointed head of the laboratory. Several systems for generating an alternating current for aircraft and wind-driven plants were designed and implemented in the laboratory. The staff of the laboratory successfully carried on the development of theoretical principles of electric power conversion by power electronics pulse devices. The researchers also initiated research into totally new directions in the theory and methods of semiconductor converter analysis and synthesis. Based on the results of the research, a laboratory of conversion process energy optimisation was set up. Prof. G. S. Zinoviev headed it. The development of a new class of converter devices for electrical technologies was completed at that time. The research culminated in the development of digital algorithms and control systems for semiconductor converters. But the staff of the department extended their activity further and got actively involved in training students. In 1961, the first group of engineers in industrial electronics graduated from the department. In 1964, a doctoral programme and in 1996 a masters’ of science programme were opened at the department. Distinguished scientists made a great contribution to the success and progress achieved in research and training at the department. Here one can mention Prof. G. V. Grabovetsky, D. Sc. (Eng.), who is the author of more than 150 papers and holder of 16 patents and inventor’s certificates. He has supervised research of 2 postdoctoral and 22 doctoral students who successfully defended their theses. He is a member of a Doctor’s Board conferring D. Sc. and Cand. Sc. degree. Another bright representative of the school is Prof. G. S. Zinoviev, D. Sc. (Eng.). He is a member of the Russian Academy of Electrical Engineering, Honoured Inventor of the Russian Federation, holder of 60 inventor’s certificates and patents. He is also the author of 2 monographs, 1 textbook and 6 teaching manuals. Prof. G. S. Zinoviev has prepared 1 doctor of science and 5 candidates of science in engineering, Chairman of a Doctor’s Board conferring the Cand. Sc. degree and Vice-Chairman of a Doctor’s Board conferring the D. Sc. degree. Prof. S. A. Kharitonov, D. Sc. (Eng.) who is now head of the department has also contributed greatly to the achievements of the school.

At present 27 staff members, 2 postdoctoral and 6 doctoral students are doing research in the school.
