Preparing for classes

Before each class session, a teacher must do such things as review subject matter, prepare learning activities, and plan special projects. This preparation is often called a daily lesson plan. Teachers have guidelines to help them plan their teaching. For example, local school boards usually decide the curriculum (courses of study and other learning activities) for students to follow. Many local school boards involve teachers in the process of planning the curriculum for the area’s schools.

A state or local school board may also set general learning goals for students. Such learning goals include the acquiring of certain knowledge and skills and the development of certain values and attitudes. If a school board does not outline these goals, teachers and administrators must decide them. Many teachers involve their students in deciding learning goals. Within the guidelines, most teachers are free to plan the kinds of activities they think will help students meet the desired goals.
