Exercise 7. Find the equivalents in the text:

1. Інтернет – це величезна всесвітня мережа з мільйонами комп’ютерів, з’єднаних один з одним для обміну інформацією, електронною поштою, новинами, ресурсами та ідеями. 2. Натиснувши кілька клавіш на клавіатурі ти можеш отримати доступ до матеріалів майже повсюди. 3. WWW – це система, яка базується на гіпертексті і за допомогою якої ти можеш подорожувати по Інтернету. 4. Гіпертекст – це текст, який вміщує зв’язки з іншими документами. 5. Спеціальна програма, відома як “браузер”, може допомогти тобі шукати новини, картинки, віртуальні музеї, електронні журнали і друкувати веб-сторінки. 6. Програми для Інтернет відеоконференцій дозволяють користувачам розмовляти і бачити один одного, обмінюватися текстовою і графічною інформацією та співпрацювати. 7. Комп’ютерні мережі можуть бути з’єднані разом телефонними лініями або волокнисто-оптичними кабелями. 8. Мережі на різних континентах можуть також бути з’єднані через супутники.

Exercise 8. Translate into Ukrainian paying attention to the active vocabulary of the text.

1. There is information on all sorts of topics on the Internet, including the arts, business, news, politics and weather forecast. 2. People can communicate through e-mail, discussion groups and chat channels. 3. The World Wide Web (WWW) is a part of the Internet. 4. You can access information available on the WWW through the Web browser. 5. You need a computer (hardware) connected to a network that is a part of the Internet, and a special program (software) to be a WWW user. 6. Millions of people around the world use the Internet. 7. People send e-mail messages with the help of the Internet, a system that lets computers connect by telephone lines. 8. E-mail is the easiest means of Internet connection, and doesn’t require additional knowledge and skills.

Exercise 10. Translate the sentences and define tense and voice of the predicate.

1. Computers were first introduced in 40’s and 50’s. 2.Now DOS isn’t commonly used PC operating system. 3. DOS was developed by a company named Microsoft. 4. Today the use of hardware devices such as the printer or mouse are controlled and managed by operating systems. 5. More than half the information that is transferred across the Internet is accessed through the WWW. 8. A new car model was much spoken about. 9. His experience in the field of materials science can be relied upon. 10. The new discovery was often referred to. 11. Laser was dreamt of by mankind for centuries. 12. The appearance of laser was followed by the fabrication of ultra thin silicon fibers servicing as lightwave conductors (світлопровід).

Exercise 11. Questions for group discussion:

Has anyone in your group experience working on the Internet?

Ask them 1) about the difficulties they had; 2) useful information retrieved; 3) fun they got; 4) why so few people have experience working on the Internet.

Exercise 12. Speak about:

1) The Internet and its influence on our daily life.

2) Can it help people from different countries to learn English?
