IMPERATIVE SENTENCES

Ex. 1 (elementary). A.Make the sentence negative.

1. Look at the blackboard. 2. Find a seat for the guest. 3. Let me pass here first. 4. Let’s go to the cinema. 5. Let him take one more piece of bread. 6. Eat your soup quickly. 7. Let’s read the article. 8. Hand in your tests. 9. Finish your porridge. 10. Let’s phone them once again. 11. Let’s keep it secret. 12. Let them walk barefoot. 13. Make yourself a cup of tea. 14. Speak louder.

B.Make tag questions out of the sentences in the exercise 1A and out of their negative forms.

E.g.: Look at the blackboard, won’t you? Don’t look at the blackboard, will you?

Let’s (not) go to the cinema, shall we?

Ex. 2.Make an imperative sentence according to the request.

E.g.: Invite Peter to go for a walk in the central park. – Peter, let’s go for a walk in the central park. Find out if you are supposed to leave. – Shall I leave?

1. Ask Mary to do her homework now. 2. Tell him not to go there now. 3. Ask Ann not to prepare breakfast tomorrow. 4. Find out if you are supposed to come at three tomorrow. 5. Tell Bill not to wake up John. 6. Offer Jane a cup of coffee. 7. Find out if you are supposed to buy some fresh bread. 8. Ask her not to dictate those letters. 9. Invite Peter to have lunch in the cafeteria. 10. Suggest Ben not going to the movies. 11. Ask the students not to smoke here. 12. Suggest Bill doing mathematics after lunch. 13. Find out if you are supposed to repeat the phrase. 14. Suggest Lily having a cup of coffee together. 15. Ask Jane to stay in the language laboratory. 16. Find out if your son is supposed to visit a doctor.

Ex. 3 (elementary).Don’t agree with sentence and suggest your idea.

E.g.: Let’s go for a walk (to go to the movies). – Let’s not go for a walk. Let’s go to the movies.

Stay at home (to go out). – Don’t stay at home. Go out.

1. Let’s go to the movies (to go to the theatre). 2. Let’s work in the laboratory (to stay in the library). 3. Open the window (to open the door). 4. Come back at 6:30 (to come back later). 5. Let’s have some ice-cream (to have some apple pie). 6. Water the flowers (to remove them from the window). 7. Let’s have White Fish Dinner (to have Roast Beef Dinner). 8. Cook mashed potatoes (to cook cabbage soup).

Ex. 4.Put in alwaysor never.

E.g.: Try to tell the truth. – Always try to tell the truth.

Do that again. – Never do that again.

1. Add salt to potatoes when you cook them. 2. Check the tyres before you drive a car. 3. Cook chicken when it is frozen. 4. Wait more than 15 minutes for someone who is late. 5. Unplug electrical appliances before repairing them. 6. Count your change after buying something. 7. Put off till tomorrow what you can do today. 8. Say ‘I will love you forever’. 9. Pay bills the day you get them. 10. Apologize for things that are not your fault. 11. Think twice before you say something. 12. Cross the road before the running car. 13. Eat cucumbers with milk. 14. Be rude to your parents. 15. Keep your promise. 16. Thank people for their help.

Ex. 5 (advanced).Make sentences beginning with emphatic do (don’t) +be+ the suggested words or phrases:

angry back by midnight careful frightened greedy jealous on time rude stupid

E.g.: Your child is eating too much. – Don’t be greedy!

1. Your child is going to cycle to school through heavy traffic. 2. You are just going to tell your friend that you have damaged his car. 3. Your teenage child is going out to a party. 4. You are coming into the room where a child is sitting in the dark. 5. Your ten-year-old child is telling you he is going to leave home. 6. You are arranging to meet with Mary who is always late. 7. Your little brother has just told you to shut up. 8. Your boyfriend/girlfriend is upset because you went out with someone else.

Ex. 6. Translate.

1. Давайте вип’ємо по чашці кави. 2. Скажи мені, будь ласка, номер твого телефону. – Записуй: 756-18-92. 3. Помити підлогу? 4. Давайте підемо в театр сьогодні ввечері, добре? 5. Давай не будемо заходити до кафе та пити каву. 6. Давайте зараз не підемо в парк, а підемо в кіно. 7. Посолодити твій чай? 8. Я хочу пити. Давай купимо води, добре? 9. Не поспішай, добре? Лекція розпочнеться за півгодини. 10. Ніколи не купуй ці сливи. 11. Давай не підемо до бібліотеки, а попрацюємо в лінгафонному кабінеті. 12. Передати вам ще хліба? 13. Почекати на тебе? 14. Ніколи не питай мене про це, я все одно нічого не знаю. 15. У мене дві ручки. Дати тобі одну? 16. Давай купимо машину, добре? 17. Припиніть розмови, добре? 18. Ніколи не кричіть, коли дитина спить. 19. Завжди мий після себе посуд. 20. Дайте мені шматок крейди, будь ласка. 21. Обов’язково поклади виделки та ножі на полицю. 22. Подивись, зірка падає. 23.
