Gerund Герундій – це не особова форма дієслова, що має властивості дієслова й іменника. 1) The students continued listening attentively about US political system. 2) In line with the American tradition of keeping government as close to the people as possible, the states delegate many of their powers to their political subdivisions.
	Active Gerund	Passive Gerund
Indefinite	Politicians like helping people.	People like being helped by politicians.
Perfect	The politician remembers having helped that American to appeal his case to the Supreme Court.	The American remembers having been helped to appeal his case to the Supreme Court.

I. Transform the sentences using the gerund instead of the infinitive.

Model: Barack Obama began to work as the US President in 2009. –

Barack Obama began working as the US President in 2009.

Voters like to elect executives who are responsible for roads, parks, libraries, sewage and other services.

2. George W. Bush started to rule the country in 2001.

We continue to study English.

4. Ukrainian politicians intend to improve the country’s political system.

5. The Ambassador preferred to go to the USA by charter flight.

6. I have just begun to translate the text about the US Vice President’s duties.

II. Combine the sentences using thegerund.

Model: You helped me with US visa. I thank you for it. – I thank you for having helped me with US visa.

1. The woman showed me the way to the Senate. I thank her for it.

2. The teacher explained the grammar rule. The students thanked her for it.

3. The secretary reminded the Minister about the meeting. He thanked her for it.

4. You gave me an English-Ukrainian dictionary. I thank you for it.

5. The judge was late, but the court waited for him. He thanked for it.

6. The President refused to sign the bill. American citizens thanked him for it.

III. Transform the following sentences using gerundial phrases instead of the subordinate clauses.

Model: I think I’ll go to Washington next week. – I think of going to Washington next week.

1. That American thinks he’ll join the Democratic Party.

2. Tom thinks he’ll vote for Barack Obama in next president election.

3. Ann thought she would take a taxi to get to the White House.

4. The politicians thought they would adopt that bill.

5. She thought they would sell the house in the country and buy a small flat in New York.

6. The President thinks he will appoint Mr. Smith to a federal judge.
